About Brooks Schandelmeier
My grandfather first came to Annapolis as part of the Naval Academy Class of 1958. He was immediately charmed by this city. How could he not be? Annapolis is the city where my grandparents fell in love, my parents went on dates by the waterfront, where I met my wife, and built my life.
I'm grateful for these opportunities that Annapolis has provided, but not everyone is given the same chance. Too many families are cost-burdened by housing, young people are priced out, small businesses face outdated red tape, and climate change brings disruptive flooding.
I'm running for office to change that. We need an Annapolis where everyone has the opportunity to thrive—where residents can afford to stay, workers can live where they serve, entrepreneurs can create jobs, and neighborhoods are safe, connected, and resilient.
Because we all do better when we create Opportunity for All.
Priorities and Issues
I’m grateful to have gotten my start here in Annapolis—in a safe and affordable home, working in our restaurants and in the General Assembly, meeting my wife, and building a life in this community. But I know opportunities like these are slipping away for too many families. As Alderman, I’ve made it my mission to create Opportunity for All.
Housing Affordability
One in three Annapolis residents are cost-burdened by housing. Families, workers, and young people are being pushed out of the city they call home. That’s why housing affordability is my top priority. I passed legislation to legalize accessory dwelling units, cosponsored stronger enforcement of moderately priced dwelling unit mandates, and fought to protect “Missing Middle Housing” in our comprehensive plan. I’ll continue leading on policies that keep Annapolis livable for working families.
Child Care
Parents in Annapolis face child care costs as high as a mortgage and waitlists up to a year long. I’ve taken action by expanding where child care facilities can open, removing harmful staffing restrictions, and cosponsoring budget support for families. I’ll keep working to make sure parents don’t have to choose between their careers and their children.
Small Businesses
As Chair of the Economic Matters Committee, I led the most innovative economic development program in Maryland—one built by listening to entrepreneurs, not giving handouts to corporations. I helped local businesses grow, legalized food trucks to expand opportunities, and made sure dollars stay in our community. Our small businesses make Annapolis unique, and I’ll keep fighting for them.
